Run commands

Start and stop your apps, read their output, and see everything that's running in Activity.

desktop guide · 3 min read

The Commands tab of the right panel lists every app in the project with its commands. Commands are the ones you set up in Add and edit projects.

Start and stop

  • Start all runs each app’s start command. Stop all stops every running command in the project.
  • Each command row has its own Run button, and Stop and Restart while it runs.
  • Stop all processes in the ☰ menu stops everything in every project.

Stopping a command also stops every process it started, so dev servers don’t linger in the background.

Read the output

Running a command, or clicking its row, opens its output as a tab in the terminal workspace, named after the app and command (for example web · dev).

  • The output is a real terminal. Colours are kept, and you can type into the program, for example to answer a prompt.
  • Ctrl+C in the tab interrupts the command.
  • Closing the tab only hides the output. The command keeps running; click its row to see it again.
  • After a command finishes, the tab shows Run again.

Status colours

Status Meaning
starting Dockmaster is launching the command
running The command is running
healthy The command is running and every port listed for the app accepts connections
stopped You stopped or interrupted it
done It finished on its own with exit code 0
failed It exited with an error or couldn’t start

The dot next to a project in the sidebar shows its most important status, so a failed command stands out. When a command fails, Dockmaster also shows a desktop notification.

Ports and groups

  • If an app has ports, they appear as links under its name. Click one to open http://localhost:<port> in your browser.
  • Drag commands by their handle to reorder them. Click + Add group to create a group, then drag commands into it. Click a group’s name to rename it.
  • The ⋮ menu on an app opens its folder in your editor or an external terminal.

Activity

The Activity tab in the top bar lists every command started since Dockmaster opened, across all projects: project and app, command, status, ports and uptime. Failed commands are listed first.

Click a row to jump to that command’s output, or use its Stop or Run button.
